Reasons to visit MOJACAR

Mojácar is located in the South-East of the Iberian Peninsula in Almeria. The Old Quarter, called Mojácar Pueblo, is 175 meters above sea level next to a spring. Its whitewashed houses nestle in the lower foothills of the beautiful Cabrera's mountain range, overlooking a canyon carved out by the Aguas River as it flows to the sea, irrigating market gardens and olive and orange groves. Only two kilometers downstream, Mojácar takes on a nautical air, the warm waters of the Mediterranean bathing its 17 km of beaches and coves.

A unique microclimate Its excellent orientation is the best for maximum sunlight, giving more light and a warmer temperature. Mojácar has 3.180 sun hours per year.

Historical Mojácar

Lovers of history can find in Mojácar archaeological remains of the most ancient cultures. There sites such as Cueva del Algarrobo cave with its Neolithic remains, remains from the cooper Age in Las Huertas, and the necropolises of Loma de Belmonte and Cabecico de Aguilar, with remains from both the Agar Culture and the Copper Age. The fame of the nearby Sierra Almagrera's mineral wealth, with precious metals to be found in the subsoil, was without doubt a powerful focus of attraction for Mediterranean colonizers such as the Phoenicians and Greeks. During the High Roman Empire the area enjoyed remarkable socio-economic growth sustained by the exploitation of the district's natural resources: metallurgy, salt pans and cured fish products. The present site of Mojácar have been uncovered, we also know that between the 6th and 7th centuries AD and until the mid 13th century, the town, first a Visigoth, and then Muslim settlement, was located in what is known today as Mojácar la vieja with its pyramid-shaped hillock, the Montem Sacrum, nest to the river Aguas, a river that supplied one of the most impressive surviving cisterns dating from the Kingdom of Granada.

Getting to know mojácar

The public fountain is the most important place in the town. Mentioned in old Arab texts, Mojácar public fountain was of vital importance to the decision of where to found the city and for centuries was, of necessity, a meeting place. Its crystalline waters that gush from its twelve spouts have irrigated vegetable plots and supplies the city with both drinking water and water for washing the clothes with the feet in the water.

Today it retains its original use as well as being the venue for several chamber music concerts during the summer months.

Church of Santa Maria, built in the late 16th century of large stone ashlars upon a site that was probably a mosque and next to the plaza del parterre ( a former Islamic cemetery) fulfilled a double function, as a place of worship and as a stronghold.

The city gate, this is the original access to the city,, was rebuilt in the 16th century on the site of the original Arab gate.

El arrabal Quarter, this beautiful area of winding narrow streets used to be the city's Jewish Quarter. It is a must if visitors really want to capture the flavour of the city.

El mirador del Castillo Belvedere, the site was once a watchtower and fortress, today the only element remaining is its cistern, now an Arts Centre."Fama"

Mojácar beaches

The beaches of Mojácar are only two kilometers away from this ancient city and are linked by Avenida de Andalucia. La Costa is an area of white buildings inspired by typical Mediterranean architecture, their aesthetics an d height strictly regulated, thus endowing them with an Andalusian flavour. Restaurants, bars, cafeteria, beach bars, hotels, shops and other complementary services offer visitors a wide selection of leisure activities where you can enjoy a wide range of cuisine. It combine international cuisine with delicious traditional stews of unmistakeable Arab origins that make good use of the surrounding area's vegetable produce.

Nature

It is in a beautiful natural location, sheltered by the Sierra de Cabrera which offers numerous walks where we will discover species of flora and fauna. The rolling olive and orange groves and stands of wild olive with the air perfumed by rosemary, thyme and lavender, contrast with the craggy peaks of the Sierra.

Golf

Mojácar's privileged micro climate means that golf can be played here all year round. Added to this is one of the Mediterranean 's most modern hotel infrastructures and a wide range of other leisure and free-time activities. At present the borough has an 18 -hole course of modern design-the Marina Golf Mojácar which, divided into two parts, afford excellent sea views and magnificent views of the mountings and farmland respectively.

The most important golf Beach Macenas Beach and Golf Resort has been projected of integral form by a very clear idea of respect to the nature and to the environment. Because of it, it incorporates constructive innovations and out-standing initiatives of protection environmental way, bearing in mind that the neighbor Cabo de Gata's nature reserve was declared reservation of the biosphere in 1997 by the UNESCO.
